Whether it's personal goods or business products, one of the most common questions ShipCanada representatives get is "What is the cheapest way to Ship in Canada?". The answer to this depends on a number of factors.
The question usually comes down to whether it will be more cost effective to ship by "courier" or if you should have the freight "Palletised" and shipped via motor freight. To answer this question it is helpful to work with a company that offers both services.
As an example, if a student was moving from Toronto, Ontario to Vancouver, British Columbia and they had 10 Boxes (24" x 12" x 12" 25 lbs. each) this would cost approximately $275.00 by ShipCanada courier. (this would be the most economical way to ship) However, if that same student had 30 boxes if would likely be more economical to consolidate these boxes on a pallet and ship them as motor freight. (approximately $470.00. ShipCanada is one of the only companies in Canada that will provide a "shipping-mode" calculation to ensure our clients are getting the lowest cost shipping option.
The are certainly other considerations when deciding on the appropriate shipping options for your shipment. Courier shipments generally move across multiple conveyor sorting systems while in transit. This represents a problem for fragile pieces or boxes that that are strong enough to withstand the rigours of sortation machines. In this case it is advisable to consider moving your goods as LTL (Less than Truckload) freight as contact with the items is minimal.
One the challenges with switching from "courier service" to "LTL service" si the loading and unloading facilities. Since LTL moves on larger trucks (usually 24' long), you will have to ensure that the pickup and delivery locations can accomodate commercial vehicles for delivery. Additionally, LTL is "Curbside Service Only". This means that when your freight is shipped on a pallet it will be delivered burbside only and not to the front door.
