People often confuse Pallets and Skids.  Pallets are the conventional method used for shipping freight in North America.
A pallet is  typically 48" x 40" x 4"-6". and is designed to be moved via forklift.
The difference with a "skid" is that a skid does not have lateral wood strapping securing the base.
